The Trust, better known for their magnificent 60m brigs PRINCE WILLIAM and STAVROS S NIARCHOS, recently purchased four ‘round the world' ocean going yachts to provide more sail training opportunities for young people.

The Challenger Yachts are 72 foot long (22 metres) and take a crew of 18 and their visit to Tor Bay will be a highlight of their summer programme.

The week-long event starts in Portsmouth on 24th May and the crews will learn how to sail the yacht on their voyage down to Devon. On 28th May, the crews will compete in a long distance coastal race from Weymouth to Brixham, finishing in Tor Bay in the early evening of 28 May. After a days rest, all four Challengers will compete in a series of close-quarter races around ‘markers' placed in Tor Bay on Friday 30th May.

The racing is being supported by Brixham Yacht Club, who were instrumental in helping the Trust organise last year's Brig Match Race between PRINCE WILLIAM and STAVROS.

Young people aged 16 to 25 from the South Hams region are being sought to join the Challengers race crew. Due to the generosity of local donors, a number of bursaries are available to help with the cost. The seven night voyage from Portsmouth to Brixham, from 24th to 31st May, costs £499, but may be substantially funded with a bursary.

To apply applicants should contact Chas Cowell at the Tall Ships Youth Trust on 023 9283 2055 or email chas.cowell@tallships.org.

No sailing experience required.

After the completion of the first Race Week, the Challengers will leave Tor Bay on 01 June and sail back to Portsmouth for a second Challenger Race Week. This time the long distance coastal race will be from Weymouth to Cowes and the yachts will compete in spectacular ‘round the cans' racing in the Solent. Berths are available for people aged 18-75 and places are available from £499.

For more information on funding and how to get on board see www.tallships.org or call the Tall Ships Reservations Desk on 023 9283 2055.
