Sea Rangers “floating” after national success!

90th anniversary National champions!

That's the proud boast of Brixham's Sea Rangers and Cadets who, despite tough competition, swept the board at the national regatta in Sutton Coldfield.

National Regatta

Altogether, 12 girls, 3 officers and a small band of supporters made the trip for two days of tough competition from 10 other crews from across the country.

The victorious Brixham crew, officially known as SRS/CSRS Churchill, the only Sea Rangers left in the West Country, sank the opposition in the Cadet age group (nine to 13 years) and put up a good fight in the Rangers age group (13 to 21 years) to walk off with armfuls of trophies and certificates.

“We are very proud of all of them” said Skipper Steph Luscombe, who runs the all girl group, “this is our 90th anniversary year, so to do so well this year is great. To celebrate the 90 th year we were all given commemoration neckerchiefs and shared a large birthday cake.”

“The girls also entered two competitions, in the weeks leading up to the regatta, to put together a cook book and to design a flag, both of which they won.” Said 1st

Lt Lucy Jones

The Cadets won 4 races, and came second in another, which resulted in them winning the over all boating trophy. And for the cook book they won the Betty Kitt trophy, the first time that they have ever won this. The cadets also competed in the dolphin trophy, a maritime skills competition, and just missed out on a top place after finishing fourth.

The Rangers also did well, winning one event and coming third in another.

Captain Sue Cotterill added “everyone made a big effort, especially on finals day when there was a strong cross wind” .“The Girls achievements are a credit to their own hard work and dedication and to the level of instruction from the officers” added Skipper.

Now the call has gone out for more recruits to be part of the success story, any girl aged nine to 18 is invited to contact SRS Churchill at the Cabin, Breakwater hard any Wednesday evening between 6pm and 9pm or ring Skipper on 01803 855182.
