Brixham Archers
The Brixham
Archers have been established since 1969.
We are
a group of around 60 to 70 people, ranging from about 11 years
of age through to the more mature ages of retirement. Although
our members are predominantly adults, we do have junior members
and we would encourage the participation of family groups.
Due to
the nature of our sport, and in keeping with the club's “Child
Protection Policy”, we do at least require a parent or responsible
adult to accompany children under the age of 14 at all times.
About a third of our total members are female. Some of our male
members have even had to learn humility, when beaten by their
spouse!
A lot
of self discipline is needed to be successful in the challenging
sport of Archery.

|
Brixham Archers promote all aspects of archery
except hunting, which is not allowed in Great Britain. We have
facilities for “Target Archery”, which is the sort of repetitive
shooting on either a flat field or in a sports hall, similar to
what you may have seen in the Olympic Games. |
 |
We also have the use of woodlands, where we pursue the
sport of “Field Archery”. This entails following a safe, set course
throughout the woods where targets are arranged at different distances
and angles, to challenge the estimation of each archer.
|
There
are many styles of bows that are used for archery. From the
“Traditional Longbow” of the Robin Hood legend, through the
“Recurve Bows” as used in the Olympics, to the state of the
art, ultra modern “Compound Bows”.
With
the hosting of several “National Record Status Tournaments”
each year, the club has gained a very good reputation within
the South West region. All our shoots are well attended, or
even booked to capacity by competitors drawn from all over the
country.
We have
members, both junior and senior, who regularly shoot for the
County Team. Some members travel quite long distances for weekend
competitions at the highest level. Other members are quite content
to enjoy the more relaxed sessions of shooting at the club's
various venues.
We have
a qualified Coach and several very experienced members who run
regular Beginners' courses throughout the summer on Tuesday
evenings.
Anyone
wishing to book a place on one of these courses, needs to contact
either the club Coach: Malcolm Grant on 01803 843097, or the
club Secretary: Judith Booker on 01803 853687.
