October 2007 is International Walk to School Month

Children across the UK will be joining 40 other countries worldwide to promote the benefits of walking to school.

The UK campaign is focusing on how walking to school can help children engage with their local environment, and play a role in the community, rather than viewing the world from the detachment of the back seat of a car.

In Torbay there will be daily events during the week commencing Monday 15th October with the help of Gemini FM's ‘Black Thunder' Crew.

Classroom wall charts will be given to schools wanting to take part, as well as a limited number of classroom packs containing information leaflets and stickers for up to 30 children to record their journeys to school during the week. These packs will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

This year there will be a digital camera prize awarded to the school with the highest proportion of children making the journey to school on foot throughout the week, as determined by their returned wall charts.

Schools wishing to take part should contact Torbay Council's school travel advisers on (01803) 208818.
