Fairtrade
Fortnight in Brixham
The
formally known Ladieswear Co-op Shop opens for the next two
weeks to the people of Brixham as the Fairtrade shop in Brixham
for the Torbay Fairtrade Fortnight that has raised the profile
of need to give the producers and growers a fair price for
their goods, time and effort.
|
|
|
Helen
Barrett who has been one of the local Fairtrade supporters regularly
seen in and around Brixham and other Devon areas putting together
tables of Fairtrade items for sale and information about Fairtrade.
Helen states it is
brilliant that the Co-op allowed them to use the empty shop
for the Fairtrade Fortnight and at no cost as a show of support
for the Fairtrade organisation.
|
 |
There was a lot of
work needed to clean up the shop from the carpets to the windows
and Helen expressed much gratitude to those who spend days doing
so, volunteering their time.
Some volunteers spent
days unpacking the 12 boxes of items and with the Helen was
surprised at the amount of support, “The number of people that
wanted to get involved, they were so excited and were eager
to help”. |
 |
 |
|
With the support
from the locals Helen can manage the stock and other much needed
promotion of Fairtrade including another stall in Dartington
next week, with the 12 days full of people taking care of the
shop without too much help from Helen from 10 to 4.30pm Monday
to Saturday.
The shop had everything
from a range of chocolates to tea bags, crisps and biscuits
, many styles and colours of jewellery , an abundance of toys
and children's play things and not to forget the two ranges
of clothing. |
|
|
 |
Simon Black from Brixham who has
a Skate Board Shop in Hyde Road Paignton had brought in several
racks of Fairtrade clothing from Nepal adding a growing dimension
to what we know of as Fairtrade products and Simon has been
and will continue to offer Fairtrade clothes after the Fairtrade
Fortnight has ended for more info visit: www.vert-gear.co.uk
|
|
The other clothing
on display was by Quail a name that has been getting a lot of
press coverage of late and Shauna the lady that has put Quail
together has been involved with promoting Fairtrade trough her
online business. |
 |
The
cotton used in the clothes is organic and Fairtrade and comes
straight from India and Quail commissions the designs and
they are made and manufactures mostly in Devon.
Quail
uses a Brixham model to show the clothing range and all the
items can be viewed on www.quailbymail.co.uk
|
 |
Shauna will be in
the shop with the Quail products for the Fairtrade Fortnight. |
|
Many of the locals
that visited the shop on the first day were filled with excitement
and curiosity about the Fairtrade products with others that
were happy to see the shop being used and took a look at the
contents to see what it was all about.
With many of the
comments made about ‘We need a Fairtrade Shop' and ‘I wish there
was one open permanently'.
|
|
Helen's final comments
on the first morning were ‘It's been excellent! A great morning
and I hope it continues'.
If you missed the opening and wanted
to know what's it all about there are still 11 more days to
go not including Sundays and if you feel you want to support
some of the communities worldwide then why not give some Fairtrade
items for Easter there's lots of good quality chocolate products
to choose from. |
For those who want
to get more involved with the Fairtrade then ask in the Fairtrade
Fortnight Shop on 77 Fore Street.
