Brixham Town Hall and actor John Slater commemorated with a blue plaque

The first of three blue plaques commissioned by Brixham Town Council 's in partnership with Torbay Civic Society is to be unveiled on Monday 28th April at 3pm.

In the Brixham Theatre much loved by John Slater, late Brixham resident, guests and civic dignitaries will witness Mrs Betty Slater unveil a blue plaque to her husband who starred in many films and television shows, including Z Cars. John and Betty Slater had a home in Brixham and John staged performances in the theatre to help keep it going when it was threatened with closure.

Brixham Town Council agreed to fund blue plaques that commemorate famous residents of the town and this is the initial one of those to be unveiled. The plaque will be sited on the exterior of Brixham Town Hall and has information on the building of the Town Hall in 1886 by local architect George Bridgman.

 

The Chairman of Brixham Town Council , Vic Ellery said “This tribute to John Slater who was an outstanding actor and a much loved character in Brixham is an excellent start to the Town Council's objective of raising the awareness of the history of Brixham and of its famous former residents. It is a great honour as the first Chairman of the first Brixham Town Council in its inaugural year to be unveiling our first blue plaque”.
