Brixham 'folk have harvested the sea for centuries', and the fishing fleet which still lands catches every day continues to be one of the largest fisheries in England. With 800 fishermen many families here still help land the fish, auction it ,and send it off in ice. |
Brixham is proudly known as 'The Mother of Trawling' the place where boats perfected the dragging of large nets on the sea bed. This included boats such as the vintage trawlers Pilgrim (built 1885), Leader (1892),Provident(1924 ) and Vigilance(1926) all of which are still sailing out of the harbour today for public charter from the Heritage Pontoon . These trawlers have been changed from working boats into pleasure vessels as Brixham has grown into a centre for leisure sailing with the large Marina attracting many seafaring visitors and local boat owners.
