Brixham
a Record Breaker?
| Well over a thousand turned out to support
the Guinness World Record Attempt in Brixham, where the Brixham
Buccaneers Pirate Festival set out to round up the largest gathering
of pirates in one place, on Sunday 2nd May. |
| Pirates came in all shapes and sizes,
even some on stilts, with whole families dressed up in character
needing eye patch, hat and sword or pistol to qualify for the
count. In amongst the groups of local people were recognizable
pirates including Captain Jack Sparrow who enjoyed hosting a competition
to select the best look alike. |
| Whilst colourful parrots from Birdline
UK posed on the arms of passing pirates, full life size replica
pirates were stationed on the quayside, but were not allowed
in the final count, which put the number of pirates gathered in
Brixham for the attempt at 1702. |
| Guns were fired to mark the official
period of the count, with no one allowed to leave until after
the final gun shot and everyone huddled together in the cold and
windy conditions from Kings Quay along Marina Walk. |
| This year's attempt, subject to Guinness
verification, means that Brixham has taken back the title from
the pirates in the USA who gathered at Oregan last year to thwart
Brixham's victorious World Record in May 2009. |
| At the World Record Attempt F.I.S.H.
also launched the new Brixham Fisherman's calendar, which sold
well and will help towards creating funds to see the sculpture
'Storm', by local artist Elisabeth Hadley come to Brixham, which
will be a memorial to all fishermen and will hopefully become
as famous as the Mermaid sculpture is in Copenhagen. |
