Brixham Trawler Race 07 Highlights

Preparation of the Trawler Race 2007 starts with the individual trawlers getting out of Brixham Harbour and passing the Lighthouse on the Northern Arm. The Torbay All weather Lifeboat served an additional purpose of not only being on keeping an eye on the safety and being prepared for an emergencies that might arise but they also had Captain of the HMS Tyne on board.

The Trawlers were decked out with flags filled with guests on board enjoying the experience of the race with on board drinks, food and on some Trawlers music giving those on board a unique party around the Bay.

Not only were there many trawlers in the race but there were also many other boats in the area getting a great view from the deck of a boat.

The trawlers invovled in the race spent alot of time going back and fourth as they awaited their class of race passing the lighthouse and heading out passed the Breakwater Beach giving oppourtunities for visitors and locals to photograph the magnificent trawlers all dressed up.

Near the starting position the trawlers got in position to take on their rivals of trawlers in the similiar classes.

The guns that started the races were positioned in the Brixham Battery Gardens and could be heard miles away and even startled the on lookers that had gathered at the Battery Gardens.

As the bigger trawlers took up positions for their races they had that overwhelming stature of size and power as they created wakes that rival stormy seas and needed a close eye on for those little boats close by to get a good view.

The weather was dry and mostly sunny with some patchy cloud, the wind had been very calm and with a relatively flat sea surface. The visiblity was fantastic and the whole of Torbay could be seen clearly behind the trawlers as they left Brixham.

The bigger trawlers were now getting into position for the start of the race and they would could speeding out from behind the Northern Arm towards the starting point just accross from the Battery Gardens.

After the start the trawlers would head down passed Goodrington, Paignton, Preston, Livermead, crossing over towards the Torquay Harbour and along the Torbay passed Meadfoot and then back accross to Brixham.

The turning point as the trawlers headed back towards Brixham was a marker when looking from the Battery Gardens was just behind the Lighthouse giving a very dramatic view of the Trawlers in competition with each other and in such close contact.

The Final spurt for the finnish line just passed the lighhouse towards the start line position, with a spectacular approach of the Torbay All Weather Lifeboat heading towards the leading trawlers.
