The Brix Awards 2007
The chocolate fountain
flowed as the guests arrived at the Mulberry Room of the Berry
Head Hotel for this year's Brix Awards,March 2007. |

Designed
to celebrate the achievements of young people within this community,it
was an evening packed with clips of video diaries showing how
young people had been working throughout the past year with
different local groups and organizations. |
| The night saw nomination
after nomination by the leaders of these community groups keen
to commend the efforts of the young people who got involved. |
|
The
awards began with Legit & Scarper receiving certificates
for their initiative in forming a group inspired by disabled
young people who just wanted to have a chance to get out and
do more. |
| The group went on to
applying for money to enable them to get around more easily, with
Rhys Morgan-Vale, Luke Harvey, Zach Ward, Josie Reap, Chris Clare
gaining financial support from the Toffy Fund- Torbay Opportunity
Fund for Young People. |

For
their work with the Brixham Battery Group, Robbie Robinson presented
awards to Steven Joy, Karl Joy, Jenni Joy, Aryden Pocock, Ben
Ford, Lee Cozens, Steven McKeating, Charles McKeating, Kenneth
McKeating, for their involvement in the recent filming of Between
the Lines. |
| This film with other
documentaries will be shown at the Battery Museum's latest educational
facilities and help with World War 2 studies as schools gear up
to its new prominent role in the curriculum.

Skate park regulars
Corey Gray, Shaun Wadeson, Jamie Greenwood, Ryan Allen, Stuart
Clyburn and Lewis Wright were applauded for advancing their
skills, whilst Bethany Bullock, Jodie Ward, Felix Miall received
certificates for joining the Y Surf Project set up by Rob Hunt
& Ben Sharpe to provide young people with the chance to
take to the surf and enjoy learning new skills. |
| Geoff Green on behalf
of the DCF Swim Scheme in 2007 praised the efforts of Aelwin Boulton,
Robert Cahill, Joshua Caunter Andy Deale, Luka Ford, Matilda Iszard,
Alana Riley, Gary Rooney, Christy Wilkinson and Rebecca Stone,
for helping other youngsters learn to swim. |

This year's Youth Achievements Awards
saw certificates go to Ben Moore, Ben Rourke, Nathan Belcher,
Sarah Crawford, Tiffany Richards, Ashley Barton, Oliver Good ,
and Steven Marlow for personal growth through a series of project
including working with the Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust
Rangers. |
| Through the PAYP scheme
Alex Hendry, Corey Gray, Sammi Handshaw, Shannon Davies, Natalie
Cartmill, Harry Edser, Yogi Tonge, Ricky Tucker, Dan Carrieles
were given opportunities to try out new activities and they took
the opportunity they were given to develop personal skills. |

Nia
Thorpe steering the HEAT project wanted Jo Ridge and Zach Ward
from Brixham Community College to be recognized for all their
efforts to promote the project, designed to create a Heritage
Environmental Art Trail around Brixham.
Angela
Neil introduced
HYPA
- (Helping Young People Achieve) as a group of young people
who have over the last four years gone from strength to strength.

| She
described how the group wrote their own funding bid with YES,
gaining a large grant to put on the Brixham Bonanza Day last
summer, a free event for all local children.They
also put together a Beauty & the Beast float for the Parade
last Christmas. Members of the group receiving awards were Amy
Bullock, Bethany Bullock, Jodie Ward, Zach Ward, Georgia Chipperfield,
Miliie Chipperfield, Ellen McGarey, Amy Anspach, Celeste Powell,
Charley Rose, Katrina Percival, Luke Harvey, Rhys Morgan Vale
and Chris Willis. |

Music
was provided at the start of the evening by Colin Bache and
again half way through the night by William, Tom and James who
provided haunting tunes on their clarinet, flute and saxophone,
marking their musical achievements and money raising efforts
for charity. |
| Cameron Leaf and Cory
Gray were also recognized for their musical contributions to the
YES Jam Nites, with Dannielle Parsons, Matt Parsons, Kirsty Voisey,
Sam Kelly, Sarah Forster, Harley Lamont, Catherine Batty and Lydia
Hendry receiving certificates for their commitment to guitar.

Having organized and presented the
Brix Awards for the last three years, The Young Volunteers were
applauded for their community work, with projects also including
organizing Tea dances at the Scala Hall, and Santa's Grotto at
the YES building on New Rd, last Christmas. |
With
plenty of interludes throughout the awards presentation, the
audience were encouraged to participate directly in games, quizzes,
craft work and trips to the chocolate fountain. The whole evening
was thoroughly entertaining and
everything
flowed effortlessly, thanks to the confident and professional
presentation by the team of Young Volunteers ( Kat Percival,
Zac Ward, Aelwen Boulton, Anna Hardiman, Paul Atkinson, Ricky
Tucker, Charlotte Lovell, David Forward, Rosie Lord, Ellen,
Matt James, Claudia McKibbin, Kirsty Porter and Dan Parker)
and members of the Youth Enquires Service- YES Team.

Finally
the Young Volunteers gave awards to members of the community
who offered their support to young people in a variety of ways.
To 'unsung heroes' such as Rose Coulton, (formally of YES) a
‘Bosca' was given, whilst Karen Parker, Jess Churchill, Alex
and Shenna Leaf, PC Bower and Bill Severn received a gold brick
for being a ‘Real Brick' in offering their expertise to others.
The Soroptomists, Torbay Steam Fair and Friends of ST Mary's
Church were also thanked for raising funds for YES and for recognizing
with many other people present in the room that night, the positive
contributions young people are making to Brixham. |
