| With
several sections to the show there were displays of a wide range
of flowers, cacti and succulents, Floral Art arrangements, fruit
and vegetables, collections of cakes and preserves, handicrafts
and work entered by children. This year Chairman of the Horticultural
Society John Smith visited three local primary schools to see
if they were interested in exhibiting and he was surprised at
the interest and enthusiasm schools had for horticulture and
the environment. John said,” at the Brixham Church of England
Primary School they had poly tunnels, raised beds and chickens.
Next year were going to invite all the local primary schools
to participate.” In the planter exhibited by the Brixham Church
of England School, they had many of the plants self seed from
the compost they introduced to it, whilst Furzeham Primary School
and Nursery created charming vegetable characters and Chestnut
Primary School displayed impressive flowers and vegetables from
their school plot. |

In
the main show this year John explained how the recent weather
had seriously affected the number of entries this year, with
storms and winds following a good growing season that had smashed
down many dahlias, thus dramatically reducing the usual Summer
Show exhibits. However Mr Jack Everleigh managed to produce
3 rich burgundy dahlias pom poms blooms winning him first prize,
whilst Mr David Philips gained the judges first for his tray
of fuchsias. |

Again
the Floral Art displays, which don't rely on home grown blooms,
were full of colour and vibrant arrangements in response to
titles such as ‘The Garden in Summer' and ‘The Barrow Boy',
with Mrs June Marshall excelling and gaining several firsts,
reflecting her highly creative talent for composition and choice
of materials. |

|
| In terms of cups this year Chairman
John Smith walked away with nine trophies including the Agatha
Christie Cup and said that ‘the Horticultural Society had over
100 members' now, welcoming many new members in the last two years.'
Recently the club enjoyed their annual Garden Party which is held
in one of the member's gardens and other social events include
a Christmas Party. |

| The Society
also holds their next event, the Autumn Show, on Friday
22nd and Sat 23rd of October. The Society meet the
