At the AGM of Friends of Shoalstone Pool this year, one person was picked out as having been an invaluable friend to Shoalstone Sea Water Pool over the past 21 years!

Following the meeting at the Berry Head Hotel on June 19th, Nick Brown was awarded a Long Service Award, with Cllr Derek Singleton presenting Nick with his cup.

Chairman Rowan Molesworth said “Nick! You've been a great friend and your services down at the pool have been fantastic. The pool takes a lot less time to do up because of you!”

However last year members of the maintenance team committed themselves to tidying up throughout the winter months, with specific jobs also attended to before the usual painting and poolside safety equipment was installed in May.

This included the rebuilding of the wall around the valve, and repair work being carried out on the seaward side of the deep end of the pool.

Rowan said,” We began last October, and the Friends are now working all year round, so that we now have an easier time when re-commissioning the pool in spring.”

The Lifeguards on duty also get involved, as they are provided by Torbay Council, with whom the Friends work in conjunction.

Whilst Nick was opening the valve to let the seawater out, local Reg Harvey who walks his dog Rosie by the Pool came up to our photographer and said of Nick,” I've seen him every day throughout the winter. He's here rain or shine, hosing down or getting out the seaweed out. He really deserves a medal for what he does.”

Reg was totally unaware that the Friend's also felt that since the age of 11 Nick has made a huge commitment to Shoalstone Pool, and took the opportunity at their AGM to thank him, as he continues with the volunteer group to ensure that locals and tourists alike can enjoy this unique Brixham facility.

Rowan said,” The Friend's of Shoalstone Pool will also continue to raise funds throughout the year to help finance the work. Last year the Plymouth and South West CO-OP collected donations for us and a successful coffee morning in April bought in £200.”
