Being allowed to sign up for one boat per day over the three day event, members of brixhamnews.com who were complete novices, took the opportunity to check out the appeal of sail by joining a yacht provided courtesy of ‘Plain Sailing'. This company based at Brixham Marina provides charters and training for sail power and motor boats. www.plainsailing.co.uk

The short journey on their yacht White Spirit involved tacking off Berry Head, with crew Tim and Fiona steering and working hard initially to get the main sails out, as it proved to be rather stiff not keen to unfurl after being freshly laundered. Catching the wind Tim explained the process of developing from a basic Helmsman certification to a Competent Crew Member, then training to be a Day Skipper and working to become a Costal Skipper.

Plain Sailing offer such courses and Tim was getting ready to take the boat to London to start a journey around Great Britain with 2000 miles of costal sailing, that allows time to study the theory and carry out the practice to gain the Costal Skipper Qualification. Becoming a Yacht Master might be a long way off for novices, but the experience certainly wetted our appetites. Others trying out the taster sessions enjoyed powering through the waves as they jetted across the Bay on ribs and motor boats.

Talking to organiser, George Turpin he said, “We'd like to encourage more people to get involved in the sport and this event is an ideal way for them to have a taster, trying out different boats to see which might suit best.”
