Multi -colour Pirates!
Going to town on
a Thursday, you can't help but bump into the odd pirate! They
are making their presence in the town a regular feature on Thursdays
as more and more people are joining in the fun, dressing for
the occasion, or hanging out the Jolly Rogers to signal their
support for the Pirate Theme Day. |

| On May 3rd several characters were to
be found hanging around the Golden Hind, and the Bullers Arms
before they converged on the Tourist Information Office to judge
the first Monthly Colouring Competition. Run by traders in the
town, April's entries for the competition looked like wanted posters
for the roving pirate crew members. |

| The black outline of the pirate was
designed and drawn by local artist Daphne Van Marle with Councillor
Chris Lomas producing the image to circulate to schools, shops
and the Tourist information centre, for young people to collect,
colour and return. |

| With a selection of prizes provided
by local traders, winner of the 10 and over category was Rhiannon
from Chestnut Primary school, with runners up also receiving certificates.
Judging with Daphne, David Croney, Nigel James, and Robin the
Pirate decided on joint winners Michael Ward and Malaika Harris
for the 5-9s, whilst the under five winner Danica Shellard came
from Bristol, showing that both local and visiting children had
been inspired to have a go. |

For the May competition the pirate's vessel requires
a splash of colour and this can be collected from the Tourist
Information Office and the entry returned there by 30th May. |
