Gooseberry Pie and
Cream
This year the Gooseberry Pie arrived
at Churston Station and was processed swiftly down to Galmpton
to reach the Manor Inn as the sunshine burst through the clouds
chasing away the damp start to the day. |
|
With the pipers
leading the way Town Crier Les Ellis followed with the Galmpton
Stars on either side, ahead of the large pie made in Paignton
by Halletts the Bakers.
Carefully carrying
the pie were cadets Jim, Mark, Simon and Colin from the Britannia
Naval College Dartmouth escorted by Lieutenant Jim Correia
who was invited to officially declare the Gooseberry Pie Fair
2007 open.

| The Lieutenant described it as a great
honour and explained that the attaché to the US Navy had
come to be involved with this traditional local event thanks to
a more recent Gooseberry Pie Fair being held on the 4th
of July. At that time the attaché was invited to celebrate
with the people of Galmpton on American Independence Day and has
been attending the event ever since! This year the date was also
special to the attaché, as he and his wife celebrated their
wedding anniversary and received a bottle of champagne from the
Town Crier. He was also given the job of presenting the Galmpton
Stars, this year Luke and Brooke, with their gifts of silver salvers.

|
Prior
to cutting the pie the Rev Ian Blyde arrived just in time
to bless it with a prayer created from his own personally
prepared poem:
Creator
of the world draw nigh,
For
we ask thy blessing on this pie.
That
we who eat of it today
May
find your love in this special way.
|
 |
The
crust to remind us of thy love
Enfolding
us from above.
The
bitterness of fruit within
Reminds
us that we are prone to sin,
And
without the sweetness of thy love
We deserve
no place in thy home above.
|
|
|
And
through this cream we are pleased to share,
Remind
us of thy bounteous care.
Thus
through this pie, and that within it,
Remind
us oh Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
That
since these gifts all come from you,
We should
now our thanks renew,
And
praise you for this gooseberry pie
Oh loving
God who lives on high.

| As the pie was cut Town Crier Les stepped
up to do another service for the community that of testing the
pie, which he and the Reverend declared delicious! |

With an array of stalls at the Gooseberry Pie Fair there were
many approaches to helping raise funds for local charities. |
