‘Friends' are taking care of Furzeham Green

Walking around the Green at Furzeham, you can appreciate the many improvements made to the landscape in the last year, including; re-landscaping the former pitch and putt area, removing the central rusty fence, re-pointing and restoring entrance pillars, installing 3 litter bins and 2 notice boards, and restoring the sea view from Bonsey Gardens (rose garden). Also, in the centre of Middle Green, there now sits a Brixham Trawler! This colourful bound gravel mosaic has been designed and produced by Brixham College, with additional funding from Awards For All.

Indeed two years on, ‘Friends of Furzeham Green', having pledged to ‘protect, preserve and improve Furzeham Green', have a major impact on the area and are involved in all aspects of maintaining and developing the space there.

The old tennis courts have been converted into a Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA), accomplished through funding of £38,000 from Sport England, topped up to £41,000 by Torbay Council, with Groundwork Trust supporting the bid. The new MUGA provides the venue for a coaching programme in football, basketball and tennis, aimed at 11-16 year olds, thanks to a grant of £4,750 for this scheme from the Local Network Fund (Devon Community Foundation).

Providing more activities for young people to enjoy the Green also inspired a bid to the Big Lottery Fund for Phase1 refurbishment of the Children's Playground. With £13,900 awarded, Torbay Council has added £17,000, so that a ‘Shipwreck' installation is expected in the coming year. Meanwhile, a further bid has been submitted for Phase 2 and 3 of the plans, geared towards catering for toddlers and teenagers at the Green.

Finally, with the new Licensing Scheme, Friends of Furzeham Green have established the right to be consulted on all forthcoming events, allowing them to continue caring for this valuable community asset.
