Breaking Records at the Brixham Hap'Nin
|
|
| With the summer sun bursting through
the clouds on July 14th, the Brixham Hap'Nin also burst into life
in this its fifth year, the weather having halted the events planned
performances on the previous evening. |
 |
|
Opening
the Saturday afternoon session the Primary School Choirs proved
to be a successful addition to the programme this year as they
drew large supportive crowds, with the Eden Park Choir
and Eden Park Primary Band opening with songs from
their recent Peter Pan production. They went on to sing the
ever popular “A spoon full of sugar” from Mary Poppins followed
by a rousing version of “We will save you”, a slight variation
on “We will Rock You” by Queen.
Following
them on stage, the Church of England Primary School
Choir sang “Make someone happy” a song that they had
performed for the Comic Relief Day earlier in the year and another
piece accompanied by actions called “Reach for the Sun”. |
 |
Finally Chestnut Primary
School Choir stepped up to
offer a most moving version from Joseph of “Close every door
to me” followed by the joyful “We are the Children of the World”.
With the help of Palm 105.5 technical expertise the three choirs
proved to be a catalyst for a real ‘family friendly' fun packed
day with funds raised by this years Hap' Nin set to benefit
Brixham Primary Schools. |
| Last year the whole event saw around
£2000 raised and donated to the Brixham Indoor Pool Fund
but this year bad weather did curtail the event bring a halt to
the Friday night proceedings. Treasure John Richardson said, “It
was thoroughly miserable. It was a health and safety call as rain
and electrics just don't mix.” Nevertheless to encourage fund
raising this year, John's son Martin Jeffrey' Chairman of the
Brixham Hap'Nin promised to have his hair and beard shaved off
if owners of the Skipper Inn raised more than £300. |
|
|
| As nearly £400 was raised Max
the Barber from Bolton Street neatly removed the 15 year old beard!
Also continuing its contribution, The Bell Inn donated a bottle
full of coins worth £535.88 with more funds raised by guessing
the amount in the bottle with the winner this year only £4.50
out! |

With so much going on at St Mary's Park there was something
for everyone as children of different ages enjoyed giant inflatable
games, rides and slides. Donkey Dayz with their new crew member
the Polo joined Rolo, Tommy, Snow Drop, Silver and Dolly to sample
the lush green grass between rides, and if you missed them this
time you can catch up with them at Torbay Steam Fair 3rd,
4th and 5th August. |
| There was plenty to eat and drink,
with the enticing smell of hot doughnuts as crowds wandered around
the park listening to live music from Local Boys ‘Piranha' and
Kenobi, partly from Brixham and Totnes. |
|
|
| The long awaited wrestling took shape
as the POW (Professional Organised Wrestling) team put up the
wrestling stage for the patient crowds keen to cheer, and boo
their favorite wrestlers. |
|
|
 |
|
| The ‘Pretty Marvellous Boys' from out
of town were not as well received as the Brixham Wrestlers, nevertheless
they went on to win their bout. The very entertaining set of performance
put together by the POW team, were greatly appreciated by the
children who went up for the wrestlers autographs after it had
all finished. |

In
the traditional Tug-of-War four teams came forward to challenge
the Brixham Rugby Football Club defending their title as the
champions in previous years. The lads from the Rugby Club met
up with a R.N.L.I. team, a Youth Team and the Intershape Gym,
to find themselves going head to head in the final with the
Gym Team. Surprisingly the Rugby Team gave ground this year
and saw the 2007 title go to the Gym! |
 |
|
| This year also saw a first for the Hap'Nin
with the Guinness World Record attempt for the most people taking
part in a three legged race. With 63 pairs creating 126 entrants
in the line up for the start, all ages took part and the excitement
level was high as the World Record never previously attempted
set off! With the event being monitored, and pairs crossing the
line counted, the above number of entrants was declared a successful
new world record! |
 |
|
| The bands lined up to entertain during
the evening were more successful that the previous night and as
rain came at the close of the event damp crowds managed to hang
on for Starsky. |
|
|
| During the day the Environmental Health
and Consumer Protection team and the Healthy Lifestyles were on
site offering information on all sorts of topics including sun
care, beach safety, alcohol, quit smoking, driving speed limits
with stickers from ‘Be Safe Be Seen' www.hedgehogs.gov.uk
and healthy children. For details of any of the issues visit:
