Dean & Dyball Takeover…

Dean & Dyball Construction became part of one of the UK 's largest construction groups on 19 th March. Balfour Beatty plc purchased privately owned Dean & Dyball as a further step in established strategy of expanding their regional presence in the UK .

However it is still very much business as usual, Dean & Dyball will still be delivering the regeneration project at Brixham as well as many other projects across the south west region. We will still be offering a quality service to our clients and are fully committed to Brixham with the site team making good progress.

Council regeneration spokesman Cllr Derek Mills said: "We have been assured by Dean and Dyball that its recent takeover announcement will not in any way affect the Brixham works and we continue to work closely with them to keep the regeneration project on track."

Seahorse Survey…

Changes to the Wildlife and Countryside Act (1981) that came into force on 6 April 2008, have listed two types of seahorse as protected species. Under the legislation it is now an offence to damage, obstruct or disturb the two types of seahorse species found on the southern coast of Britain .

In association with the client Torbay Council, Dean and Dyball have arranged for a survey to be carried out to confirm whether seahorses are present in the waters surrounding the site at Brixham. The survey will be undertaken by an ecologist recommended by Natural England. The ecologist will be looking for the two types of seahorse species found in the UK the short-snouted and spiny seahorse.

If they are present, Dean and Dyball, will need to apply for a license before piling works for the jetty at Brixham can get underway. In the unlikelihood that seahorses are found within the construction boundary Dean & Dyball will continue to work with Natural England and other relevant agencies to ensure that they remain well cared for and protected.

Completed works to date…

Completed works to date include removal of the offshore slipway rails and mooring dolphin, removal of the fenders, anodes and other debris from the existing wave wall. A survey of the sea bed has been undertaken and debris has been removed from the line of the sheet piles. The Brixham Yacht Club pontoons have been relocated.

Works underway…

Construction of the slipway retaining wall has started along with the erection of the piling temporary works prior to the pile delivery. Final demolition of the old winch house will take place once the power to the

house is disconnected.

Looking forward into May…

Starting next week construction of the retaining wall will continue and installation of the sheet piles to form the new jetty with associated walings, steelwork and tie bars will commence.

Towards the end of April and into early May work will start in the importing and spreading of the fill material for the new jetty.
