The Strand Art Gallery |
About
the gallery and the artists
Artists
have been painting on Brixham harbourside well over
a century. Many of our current artists have been painting here
over 35 years. |
 |
The
artists paint outside in fine weather & are often photographed
for magazines and TV. Over the years they have appeared on '
Songs of Praise', 'Worzel Gummidge', 'Wish you were here', 'Swap
Shop, 'Holiday', and 'Beachcomber Bay'.
The
Gallery came about, 34 years ago, after a particular incident
when rivalry was high between the artists out on the harbourside. |
| One
artist had his paintings thrown in the harbour, and got pushed
in too! The then owner of the gallery building took pity on
him, offered him the use of this upstairs room, and the Gallery
was born. Rivalry was soon forgotten as all the artists 'banded'
together to paint & show their work in the same studio.
The incident made national TV and Press, and is now part of
Gallery history, and the artists have been painting happily
alongside each other since.
|
|
The
gallery building itself is centuries old. It is a converted
sail-loft. At one time there was no floor in the middle. It
consists of two buildings joined together, the back building,
we think, is the oldest, and built of cob.
Though
the gallery was founded by the Artist 'Bill Stockman' ,
it is now owned & run by his son, ANDREW . Though
not an artist himself, Andrew and his wife, Tina ,
administer the gallery, and are responsible for selling the
paintings on behalf of the local artists.
|
| The
area on the slipway by the William of Orange Statue has been
known for decades as "ARTISTS' CORNER". The artists sit there
at their easels & paint in fine weather, and hang their
paintings around them.
|
 |
When
not painting outside they are painting in the Strand Art Gallery
opposite, where the public can watch them 50 weeks of the year.
The paintings are on show outside all year round too, weather
permitting.
The
artists are all well-known, each for their own specialities.
|
| There is no rivalry between
them, as each one is so well-established. They are showman , as
well as artists, each being able to captivate and enthral the
public with their gift and skills: |
 |
Gordon painting a black and white of Brixham
harbour, Bill painting a sunset Victorian Brixham harbour scene,
Terry with his impressionistic 'glimpses' of the world through
the eyes of an artist, Don painting highly detailed Dartmoor panoramas,
and Bob's highly realistic Dartmoor paintings, along with Karens'
charming Victorian cottage scenes, John's finely detailed galleons,
and Alicia's 3-D sculpted paintings. |
It is
hard to make the distinction of where the 'Brixham Artists'
stop, and the Gallery begins, as one is part of the other, and
has been so for 35 years.
