TRAIL
ART contributions from Brixham
TRAIL opens on July
19th and runs until September 6th www.trail.org.uk
TRAIL artists have
been busy creating sculptures from recycled materials to adorn
the coastline from Shaldon to Dawlish. Each year ACE (a group
of disabled adults) create stunning artwork that goes on show
at Teignmouth between the pier and ice cream kiosk. It then
returns to Brixham to go on show in the Adult & Community
Learning gardens. |

This year is no exception with the craft group using recycled
Herald Expresses and Brixham News papers to create a papier mache
dolphin. ACE members became aware that the oceans are no longer
a safe place for these beautiful creatures. They are regularly
trapped in fishermen's nets where they die by drowning. Some have
been found with plastic bags ingested in their stomachs. In this
piece the dolphin will be held by a net made of recycled plastic
bags to alert the public to the dangers of plastic. |
The
ACE textile group have created a garment using recycled materials
after seeing Cheryl Cole the wife of Chelsea footballer, Ashley
Cole, wearing an exclusive designer dress covered with white
plastic flowers. This group of eight physically disabled people
have created a garment by working on calico panels which have
been painted with acrylics and decorated with appliqué,
beads, plastic and rug wool to create interesting textures.
The dress is covered
in fused plastic flowers and called ‘Eat Your Heart Out Cheryl'.
This garment will be worn by Chrissy Elsworth a Care Worker
with ACE. She will be pushing Margaret Harper's wheelchair.
Margaret will be wearing a poncho made from an old shower curtain
again with the floral theme created from beads, fused plastic
and wired lights. A fantastic opportunity for Margaret who has
never been in a fashion show!
The public will be
able to see this and other designs by coming to the Wearable
Art show at the Carlton Theatre, Teignmouth on Monday
27th July at 7.30pm. Tickets from the Tourist Information
Office price £7 and £5 for under 16's. Tel 01626

For the fourth year running a group
of 6 students and 3 volunteers have worked on an environmental
art project in willow which reflects the devastating effects our
throw away society is having on sea life. Their ‘Bottle Nosed
Dolphin' is constructed of woven willow, plastic bottles and other
plastic debris found on our shorelines. |
| The final ACE piece of work was inspired
by plastic carrier bags which are always to be seen blowing in
the wind, the more you chase them the more they escape! ‘Don't
Get Carried Away' was created by people with physical and learning
disabilities. Their tutor, Petra Turner, has recently created
a deck chair design for Torbay Council's summer display in Princess
Gardens, Torquay and thanks to Torbay Beach team Petra was able
to obtain old frames for recyling with ACE. |
|
The
group have fused coloured plastic bags together to form bands
of colour which have then been sewn together to form the seat
of the recycled deck chair embellished with unwanted house paint.
They have also captured an escaped carrier bag and trapped it
in plastic onto another deckchair seat.
Jenny Harriman the
centre manager at Brixham has also created a piece called ‘Clean
Sweep'. Using a retro pink bidet that was discarded when the
bathroom was upgraded she encrusted it in sea shells a symbol
of our good fortune in a world where clean water is taken for
granted. |
