Pirate Jenny is about to set sail

It's probably the most unusual stage show ever produced, as live action is integrated with animated cartoons which are projected behind the action for the length of the show.

Pirate Jenny

This revolutionary production is off on a middle-scale development voyage this winter, calling at Brixham Theatre on the 29th , 30th and 31st October at 7.30pm. Tickets are only £7.

The illustrations are drawn and painted by hand by Nick Ellis, who is a well established illustrator and animator Nick drew the original panoramas of Wellsley, the town where Pirate Jenny is set, in around 1997.

He imagined a small harbour surrounded by hills with rows of terraced houses, a little chapel on one side and fisherman's huts on the quay. Imagine his astonishment when visiting a friend who had moved to Brixham many years later and suddenly being faced with a real-life Wellsley. Every detail was correct, even the galleon in the harbour.

Farewell Anyone familiar with the song Pirate Jenny from Brecht/Weill's Threepenny Opera will already know the plot. Jenny is a servant girl who works at a seaside boarding house and is terribly abused by her master and heated of her inheritance.

She dreams of revenge and goes about getting it, becoming a pirate and ransacking the seven seas before finally returning to face her former abusers.

Apart from the animation, there is a complete soundscape and a harpsichord continuo plays throughout. There are a dozen original songs, glamour, dance, romance and comedy.

Postcard Harbour

Pirate jenny is full of fun, comedy, dance and some beautiful costumes.

It would seem that women still love dressing up (especially as pirates) and men love looking at them!

Pirate Jenny is directed by Michael Fentiman and produced by Nick Ellis. Perry Dennis, the award winning stand-up comedian plays Frederick Barstowe, Jenny's original abuser and suitor.

Wellsley Harbour On the menu page of the new Pirate Jenny website is a 4x4 pixel hotspot. If your mouse just happens to travel over it, a secret compartment will open and you can claim a free Half-Sovereign gold coin. But it is very difficult to find!
