Celebrating
60 years of art!
This year the Brixham
Society of Art Exhibition at the Scala Hall marked the 60th
anniversary of the group which has encouraged, developed and
presented the artwork of local people to generations of audiences
to enjoy here in Brixham. |

'Anemones'
by Brenda Horrocks
|
'Paying
Attention' by Anne Brown |
As in past
years the annual summer exhibition was well received, with one
comment in the Visitor's Book saying, ‘Very good exhibition,
with a nice cross section of work.' Indeed the wide variety
of images reflected the diverse interests of the numerous members
of the Society, captured in oil paints, water colours, and mixed
media.
With these three categories
forming the structure of the Exhibition, winners were selected
and others highly commended in these areas at the opening on
Saturday August 29th. |

Wood' by Gillian Bell |
The
sale of work during the week showed that many of the paintings
were extremely popular with the general public who bought 55
framed pieces and many prints and cards.
This year winner of
the Oils section was Marjorie Church, with Anne Brown's ‘Paying
Attention' Highly Commended. Mixed Media winner was John Graham,
whilst Derek Urban was Highly Commended and in the Water Colours
section Brenda Horrocks received Best in Show for her Snowdrops,
whilst Gillian Bell's Quiet Wood, received a Highly Commended
Award. |

'Moors Scene'
by Majorie Church
|

'Sailing
the Dart' by Peter Garrett |
Many
of these pictures sold quickly and with prints and cards available
this year, many visitors walked away with smaller versions of
paintings created by members of the Society.
Jill Durn of the Society
said, “When I joined the Society back in 1985 we met at Eden
Park and now after 25 years we have come full circle and are
meeting there once again!” |

'Smarty Pants'
by Anita Ford |

'Spanish
Morning' by Dianne Richards |
She
also explained how originally members of the Society had focused
mainly on oil painting, but over time water colour work has
become more popular and the use of other media such as pastel
and acrylic, now forms another major part of the show, in
the mixed media section.
The Society meets
every third Thursday of the month at Eden Park Primary School,
offering a series of art demonstrations and social evenings
throughout the year.
The next meeting on
the 15th October featuring a demonstration
on using gauche paint to which visitors are welcome to come
and see if they would like to join the Society, at a cost of
£2 for the evening, which runs from 7.30pm to 9.30pm.
The Society, keen
to welcome new members, will also be at the Scala Hall on the
19th September for the ‘Come & Join Us Day' 10am
to 3pm.
The next Brixham Society of Art Exhibition
will be held at the Berry Head Hotel on the Tue 3rd and
Wed 4th November, where copies of the 60th Anniversary
Calendar will be on sale, which contains scenes around Brixham
painted by members of the group. |
