| The
unveiling of a giant piece of artwork - the result of a collaboration
between schools from very different geographical and cultural
backgrounds - was the feature of a grand exhibition which started
last week.
The exhibition, at The Lighthouse Centre, Brixham College, celebrated
International Education Week with the official unveiling of
the Brixham Moscow montage project, an ambitious art project
involving two local schools and the 1414 School in Moscow.
|
The
montage was the result of a project that started with a photo
of Brixham and St Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, cut up into 360
smaller squares, with 190 of these sent to Moscow, 90 to Chestnut
Primary School, and 90 to Brixham College. Students were then
asked to paint a larger scaled version of their square without
seeing the original whole scaled photograph. These painted squares
were then returned to Brixham College where they were collated
and reformed to recreate a larger montage painting. |
The
exhibit was unveiled on Wednesday, November 15, at 12 noon,
by representatives from School 1414 in Moscow. They were hosted
in Brixham by the College and Chestnut Primary as a part of
their fact finding mission to England during International Education
Week.
The representatives included Prime Minister (Head Boy) Kostya,
Former Secretary (Head Girl) Natasha dressed in traditional
costumes, and English Teacher Irina Fomina who performed Russian
songs for the invited guests following the unveiling.
The
guests included children from Chestnut Primary and students
from Brixham Community School who had painted panels. Some found
it difficult to recognise their square now merged in with hundreds
of others just as the montage picture blended the image of Moscow
and St Basil’s Cathedral with Breakwater Beach Brixham!
Brixham College Deputy Principal Richard Burden explained: "This
has been a fascinating project, which has explored so many different
aspects of learning - history, art, languages and geography,
as well as broadening the cultural and social experiences for
pupils from both countries. The final work of art has been the
result of a superb collaboration between the schools, and much
creativity and work has gone into it.”
Torbay Council's Lead Member for Children's Services, Cllr Loretta
McHugh, said: "This is a fabulous opportunity for our local
youngsters to showcase their artistic talents. The unveiling
of the montage project also demonstrates the tremendous hard
work and co-operation between pupils here and their fellow students
in Moscow, and is a wonderful tribute to mark International
Education Week."
