Walk of Witness

The Cross the start of the Walk of Witness

This Good Friday Christians throughout Brixham joined together to walk in silence along Fore St following a large cross carried symbolically by one man. As the cross came to rest under the Old Fish Market, local Christian churches united in remembering the sacrifice and the suffering of Christ on the Cross to gain our salvation, the moment when Jesus God's Son, faced our punishment of death, so that we could be reunited with our Father.

Ian explains the crowds reaction to Jesus

The Rev Ian Blyde felt the response by some of the crowd today would not have been too dissimilar to the reaction of those watching Christ carrying his cross, with some turning away unable to face the reality of the event. An innocent man hailed as a King and hero one day then whipped and put to death a week later. Len Scott from the Fisherman's Mission read from the Bible, before those gathered sang ‘When I survey the Wondrous Cross', and finally everyone joined together in prayer:

Jesus, our Saviour, through the Gethsemane of your broken heart and Calvary of your broken body, help us to trust you when we have to face suffering of ours. May we gain understanding and compassion of others, and a deeper sense of caring than we possess when we are well. Strengthen our faith through endurance by trusting you when we can hardly see the way ahead for tears. Guide us to the realization that in mysterious ways we can sometimes share your sufferings, and even through our pain have a part in your redeeming plan. Amen

At the end of the Witness Hot Cross Buns were handed out to passers by with a napkin asking “Why a cross on a Hot Cross Bun?”

Traditionally eaten on Good Friday, when Jesus Christ was put to death, the bun's cross reminds us of what Jesus did for all mankind-even you.

Just a story or the most significant event in all history?

There's more to a Hot Cross Bun than you realise and there's even more to Jesus Christ than you think.
