| Ussuriysk,
Vladivostok and Magadan Crusades: 11-24 September 2007
David's next crusades
will be in Ussuriysk, Vladivostok and Magadan in the Far East
of Russia – 11 time zones away from UK. There will be nine
crusades in total – with additional training meetings during
the day for pastors and church members. It is David's desire
to challenge Christians to rise up and DO something for the
glory of God! After a lifetime of evangelism, David still issues
the same challenge to all believers: “If you are a born-again,
baptised, Spirit-filled believer, God has done that for a reason.
God doesn't save you and call you so that you can live at ease.
We are saved to serve!”
Please pray
for these meetings: the crusades will be broadcast
on local and regional TV channels; in addition, they will also
be edited for terrestrial TV in Ukraine, and will ultimately
be shown on Das Vierte in Germany and CNBC Europe across the
whole continent. All our TV programmes are a direct broadcast
from the crusades; one does not exist without the other.
David was last in Vladivostok
and Magadan in 2005 – at that time we had just finished a series
of live-TV crusades on the far side of Siberia: in Magadan,
the notorious former prison camp on the desolate far east coast,
we reached a quarter of a million across the whole region; in
the famous port of Vladivostok, 23 churches of all denominations
came together for the crusade – the broadcast reached the whole
of the Russian Far East, 15 million! We must win Russia
and Europe for Christ!
Ussuriysk
(14-16 September)
This attractive city
sits in the middle of a fertile valley at the junction of three
rivers. The city was founded as a prison camp in 1866 called
Nikolskoye after Tsar Nikolay. This was changed to Voroshilov
in 1935 after Kliment Voroshilov (1881-1969), Stalin's ally
during his ruthless purges and World War Two. With Khrushchev's
ascent to power after Stalin's death, Vorosilov was forced to
‘retire' in 1960 and the town's name was changed again to Ussuriysk
after the nearby river.
Vladivostok (17-19
September)
Vladivostok is Russia's
largest city port on the Pacific Ocean and the administrative
centre of Primorsky Krai. It is situated at the head of the
Golden Horn Bay not far from the Russo-Chinese border and North
Korea. It is the home port of the Russian Pacific Fleet. As
the main navel base of the fleet, the city was closed to foreigners
during the Soviet years. Nevertheless, it was at Vladivostok
that Leonid Brezhnev and Gerald Ford conducted the Strategic
Arms Limitation Talks in 1974.
The direct distance to
Moscow is 6430km – in fact Vladivostok is closer to Bangkok,
Seoul, Tokyo and Beijing than it is to Moscow!
Two thirds of Vladivostok's
suburbs are so polluted that living in them is classified as
a health hazard – some areas are so polluted that they are defined
as ‘ecological disaster zones'. Only a few areas have permissible
levels of contamination. The pollution which includes arsenic
and mercury, severely affects the respiratory and nervous systems.
Magadan (21-23
September)
Deemed unfit for human
habitation, Magadan was founded in 1933 on the site of an earlier
prison settlement from the 1920s. It was granted the status
of a city in 1939. During the Stalin era, Magadan was a major
transit centre for prisoners sent to labour camps all over that
remote and inhospitable region.
On one of our visits
to the city, the local Pastor showed us the roads which now
were covered with rough tarmac. He told us how that, under the
communist regime, prisoners were compelled to make the roads
from earth and stones. Each prisoner was allocated a section
of the road for which he was responsible and had to keep it
smooth and free from bumps or holes. This was extremely difficult
because of the extreme weather conditions and lack of materials.
If an officer rode over a section and found a small irregularity,
the prisoner responsible was summoned, forced to dig a hole
in this section where the flaw was, then he was shot and buried
in the hole he had dug. His section was then allocated to another
prisoner. This meant that every road in the town was literally
laid on the bones of the prisoners who had died.
Magadan is very isolated
– the nearest major city is Yakutsk, 2000km away via an unpaved
road which is best used in the winter. Conditions in Magadan
have deteriorated since the 1970's when gold mining provided
high levels of investment and employment. In recent years, many
factories and mining interests have closed resulting in unemployment
and alcoholism and a huge decline in the local population.
The climate of Magadan
is subarctic. Winters are prolonged and very cold, with up to
six months of sub-zero temperatures, so that the soil remains
permanently frozen. Winter will already be setting in for our
visit.
Please keep
praying for our ongoing needs:
David
is working harder than ever to preach the simple, positive Gospel
of forgiveness and reconciliation through Jesus Christ. – So
far this year we have held two All-Russia TV crusades; 30 live-TV
crusades in Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Bulgaria; started
broadcasting our evangelism weekly on Das Vierte in Germany
and CNBC Europe; in addition, our evangelism is broadcast every
Sunday morning in Ukraine. David has also held 6 ministry meetings
in Western Europe!
Please keep
praying for the ministry:
More secular TV channels
want our programmes – but they cost money! A German news channel
– N24 (the equivalent of BBC News / Sky News or USA CNN) – has
offered us a slot to broadcast the Gospel. We would be their
first ever Christian programme! It has been confirmed
that we are the only evangelistic programme which is able to
call people to repent on TV – because of the unique way our
programmes are filmed. Opportunities are opening up in Albania
too!
Please continue to pray
for our programmes on Das Vierte and CNBC Europe that many lives
will be changed by the powerful preaching of the Gospel. You
can watch the programmes on CNBC Europe every Sunday 10:30 (UK).
Pray that God will speak
to more Christian businessmen to support us. Our financial needs
are increasing with the European broadcasts – the ministry is
growing at an amazing rate. Only in heaven will we know how
many lives have been changed.
Thank you for your
prayer partnership – together we are preaching the
Power of Faith in Jesus Christ. Eurovision UK
