As well as a large
sound system, twin CD decks, karaoke facility and state of the
art lighting, the club boasts two air hockey tables, pool, table
tennis, table football and retro arcade games along with several
PS2's, PS3, X box and Nintendo Wii game consoles. There's a
chill out area with cushions and board games, sports option
in the adjacent Scala Hall, and a non-alcoholic bar selling
J2O's, cans and a variety of tuck, all of which can be enjoyed
in the dance and seating area, while perhaps watching one of
the eight TV screens scattered around the two-level venue!
Phil Marsden, minister
of Brixham Baptist Church, which houses the new club, is delighted
to see The Island Club finally up and running. “It's taken about
eight months and a lot of hard work” he said, “but the final
results have made it all worthwhile. The young people love it
and have been telling their friends all about it, and even the
adults have had a great time using the new facilities too!”
The whole project cost about twelve thousand pounds, with over
half of this given by members of the church themselves. “People
saw the need for youth provision in the town and saw the potential
of our own building to provide this for them” said Phil, “so
they dug deep and worked hard to make it happen. It just shows
what can be achieved if you believe in something enough and
all pull together to make it a reality.”
The Island Club, situated
in the Baptist Church Hall, by Brixham's bus station and taxi
rank, is now open on Friday evenings 6.15pm - 7.15pm for children
(school year's 3-6) and 7.30pm - 9.00pm for youth, with further
possibilities being considered for the future. It costs just
50p for children and £1 for youth with everything inside
then free (except the tuck of course)! With the club set to
attract large numbers, young people are encouraged to register
soon to ensure their place. Further details available from Phil
on 01803 851905.
