Festival of the Sea at All Saints Church

Transforming the space in All Saints Church has become an annual task for a dedicated team of members of their Festival of the Sea Committee. For the event the interior of the church has been filled with displays reflecting the local communities involvement with the sea, including fishing nets, ropes and trawler ‘Burgees' or flags.

The Festival also features many events held at the church and this year the Harvest of the Sea Service on Sunday 1st July saw a wonderful tribute to the sea and those who endure its power, as they bring back its benefits to this community and beyond. With the Venerable John Rawlings highlighting the invaluable service of those who rescue others at sea, members of the Lifeboat Crew and other local seafaring organizations offered Altar items as a reminder to thank to God for their skills and talents.

In its fourth year, the Marine Art Exhibition & sale of Paintings is once again proving to be a popular attraction, with organizer Jill Durn finding a helpful crew to assemble all the stands displaying a varied collection of sea scapes, harbour views and images with a watery theme'.

Jill said,” It started off as a display of my own work and has grown into an exhibition of many local artists from a variety of societies with members of the Brixham Shoal of Artists, The Brixham Society of Art and the Paignton Art Society being invited to display their work here.”

The response to buying paintings on display has this year been particularly impressive with some sold before the exhibition opened! Including oil paintings, acrylics, water colours and prints the diversity of the use of colour should appeal too many with subtle works of harbour scenes to vibrant interpretations of the Bay and sailing vessels. Peter Garrett who started painting five years, ago immediately sold several of his delicate and atmospheric water colours, with extremely reasonable prices with all the artists giving 15% of sales to the church. The exhibition runs up until Sunday the 8 th of June, accessible during the Church opening times of 10am-4pm.

To see what events are still to be run this week check out the What's on Section and lookout for the closing event an evening Supper on the 1926 sailing trawler Vigilance on Sunday 8 th at 7.00pm. (Reservations are essential by contacting 01803 853882)
