49. And,
behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry
ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from
on high.
50. And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted
up his hands, and blessed them.
51. And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted
from them, and carried up into heaven.
52. And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with
great joy:
53. And were continually in the temple, praising and blessing
God. Amen.

Abide with Me " is a hymn written by
Henry Francis Lyte in 1847 while he lay dying from tuberculosis
and he survived only a further three weeks after its completion.
He wrote it in the gardens of what is now the Berry Head Hotel,
Brixham. However as the vicar of All Saints Church Brixham,
the church is also known as the' Abide with me Church', where
countless generations have sung, what is now a world wide anthem.
This included the local fishing community who drew strength
from its words........ |
The
hymn is a prayer for God to remain present with the speaker
throughout life, through trials, and through death. The first
verse is probably the most well-known:
Abide
with me; fast falls the eventide; the darkness deepens; Lord,
with me abide. When other helpers fail and comforts flee, Help
of the helpless, O abide with me.

Revd Henry Francis Lyte:
H.F.Lyte (1793 – 1847) is Brixham's most
famous clergyman. As the first vicar of All Saints Church in
the centre of ‘Fishtown' he was a pioneering pastor to the local
fishermen and their families, and was much loved and respected.
He was also a poet and hymn-writer, and is remembered world-wide
for his hymns “Abide with me” and “Praise, my soul, the King
of Heaven”. At All Saints Church, known as the Lyte Memorial
Church, the church bells ring out three of his hymns daily,
including “Abide with me” at 8pm. Although the church has changed
since his time, Lyte's pulpit can still be seen, and various
items associated with him, together with a permanent display
telling his story. Also of interest is Lyte's home overlooking
Torbay, now open to all as the Berry Head Hotel. |
